In an official announcement by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it has been confirmed that Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi and the newly appointed council of ministers will take the oath of office and secrecy in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 9 June.
According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 7:15 PM on 9 June 2024. “The President will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister and other members of the Union Council of Ministers at 7.15 pm on June 09, 2024, at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” official account of the President of India (@rashtrapatibhvn) tweeted on X.
PM-designate Modi initiated the process earlier in the day by meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and staking the claim to form the government. This followed a meeting of leaders from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who unanimously elected Modi as their leader.
President Murmu had earlier appointed Narendra Modi to the office of Prime Minister of India. She requested Modi to advise her on the names of other individuals to be appointed as members of the Union Council of Ministers, as well as indicate the date and time for the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
An NDA delegation visited Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday and met the president. During this meeting, a letter was presented to the President, confirming Narendra Modi’s election as the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party. Letters of support from NDA constituet parties were also submitted to President Murmu.
The delegation, led by BJP president JP Nadda, included prominent party leaders such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and CN Manjunath. Representatives from other parties within the NDA, including N Chandrababu Naidu, Nitish Kumar, Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), and several others, were also part of the delegation.
Addressing the media after the meeting, PM Modi expressed gratitude to the voters for giving the NDA a third term. He assured the nation of continued dedication to development and highlighted the continuity of the NDA government.
“NDA, for the third time, has been given a chance to serve the nation. I want to thank the people of this country for giving us this chance… and want to assure them that the pace at which the country developed in the last two terms… we will work at the same pace and with the same dedication.”
Modi also emphasized the importance of coalition politics and constitutional values, acknowledging the NDA’s reliance on allies in forming the government.
Earlier today, Modi, 73, completed the formality of being named the leader of the NDA’s newly-elected MPs; his nomination was proposed by Rajnath Singh and backed by all member parties.
Following his nomination, Modi spoke about coalition politics, declaring, “Our alliance reflects the spirit of India and we are dedicated to upholding constitutional values. NDA is the most successful…”
His remarks were seen as acknowledgement of his reliance on allies – new territory after the BJP’s brute majorities in 2014 and 2019, which allowed it to form the government sans active support.
