The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge of investigating three cases related to violence against civilians that have disrupted public order in Manipur. The cases were transferred to the NIA by the State government following orders from the Union Home Ministry.
Manipur police officials have arrested 23 individuals linked to alleged “ransacking and arson of the houses” during the unrest. “These individuals were arrested from Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts of the state,” said Manipur Police on Sunday. The police also recovered a .32 pistol, seven rounds of SBBL, and eight mobile phones from their possession.
The violence, which originated on May 3 last year during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to oppose the Meitei community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe category, has continued to flare intermittently.
On Sunday, authorities imposed a curfew in both Imphal East and Imphal West districts following the recent killing of six people. Internet services were suspended across seven districts to prevent the spread of misinformation and incitement. Security forces have been heavily deployed across the region, including at key locations such as Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence and Raj Bhavan.
Meanwhile, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed grave concern over the continuing unrest in Manipur, which has led to the loss of lives, destruction of ancestral properties, and displacement of communities.
“We strongly condemn the violence and urge all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding efforts. The current situation is not only destabilising for the people of Manipur but poses a serious threat to the harmony and security of the entire Northeastern region,” the NPCC said in a statement.
The NPCC also called on the Union government to take “immediate and decisive actions to restore law and order.” Additionally, it appealed to the people of Manipur to refrain from violence and work towards unity and peace.
The situation remains tense, with sparse movement on streets and visible security measures in place. The NIA’s involvement marks a significant step in addressing the escalating violence, as efforts to restore stability and order continue. (With inputs from agencies)
