Mokokchung, 5 March (MTNews): The Presidents and Secretaries of the State Olympic Associations from the Eight North East States held a virtual meeting held on 5 March 2024 to review the preparations for the upcoming 3rd North East Games 2024, a press release informed. The games, featuring 16 sports disciplines, are scheduled to be held in Nagaland from 18 to 23 March 2024.
The meeting was chaired by Abu Metha, Working President of North East Sports Association & Secretary-General of Nagaland Olympic Association, was attended by Presidents, Secretaries, and representatives from Arunachal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Tripura was unable to attend the meeting.
The meeting resolved that the erstwhile North East Olympic Association will be rechristened as the “North East Sports Association” and the North East Olympic Games will now be officially referred to as the “North East Games.”
The decisions to rename the association and games were made in response to the advisory issued by the Indian Olympic Association on 28 February 2024 and 5 March and based on the directions of the International Olympic Committee on 31 March 2022 to all its affiliates and federations to refrain using the term Olympic and its logo as it is copyrighted and are a registered trademark protected under the Olympic Charter and belong to the Intentional Olympic Committee.
In implementation of the new nomenclatures, it was stated that all material, merchandise, brandings, and publicity related to the North East Games will use the new names. However, it said that all items produced and manufactured prior to this advisory cannot be changed due to time and resource constraints.
The meeting also expressed their gratitude to Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister, and the Government of Nagaland for unstinting support in hosting the 3rd North East Games 2024 in Nagaland.
