The Khonoma Semo-Chalieutsumia Kharu (Gate) was unveiled today at Khurükha, Khonoma, under Kohima district. The gate was inaugurated by Rev Dr Sanyü Iralu.
The Kharu of Chalieutsumia, originally constructed during the inception of Khonoma village, has undergone periodic reconstructions. One such reconstruction took place on April 28, 1948, and the latest was completed on November 16, 2024.
Speaking on the occasion, Rev Dr Iralu highlighted the gate’s importance, stating, “The gate holds great significance in the village because it protected us from the external, against enemies, internally from disunity and disharmony, as people who broke the law were sent out. A village to be strong, needs a strong gate.”
He further reflected on its historical role, saying, “In the past, it (gate) protected us against the British invasion, and today, the gate that protects us, is the living God, as believers of Christ.” Rev Dr Iralu emphasized the shift from trusting in physical structures to placing faith in God, urging the gathering to seek restoration and blessings through Him: “To enjoy the blessings, to start afresh and for restoration, we need God to rebuild our walls, which have been torn down by negativity around us.”
He concluded with a call to action: “Humble ourselves and reaffirm our trust in Him, so that He would bless us in greater ways.”
Later, Kuolachalie Seyie, president of Naga Club, and other dignitaries addressed the gathering at the main celebration held at Thezuliedzüke.
The Kharu unveiling programme was led by Lovilie Vakha, with Visosieto Vüprü performing the trumpet blowing. The main celebration was chaired by Kevisekho Chücha and compered by Lovilie Vakha and Kekhrienuo Mor.
The event also included blessings by Rev Tsolie Chase, senior pastor of Khonoma Baptist Church, and a benediction prayer by Savizo Hozoyeh.
