In the face of years of neglect and deteriorating conditions, the Mokokchung Village Council has stepped in to repair the crucial stretch of road from the Main Police Point leading to Mokokchung village. This road, falling under the jurisdiction of the Department of Urban Development, has long been in a deplorable state, despite being a key route for several important public establishments.
Village Council member, I Wapang Kichu explained that the road was previously under the Public Works Department (R&B) but came under the Department of Urban Development in 2023. However, since the transition, it has remained unattended.
Kichu stated that the road has been left neglected for many years. It is a crucial route that connects not only Mokokchung village but also several important establishments including Queen Mary Higher Secondary School, Government High School, All India Radio Station, the Superintendent of Police’s office, R Kathing Park, and the Metsüben Tourist Lodge.
With the Moatsü-cum-Mini Hornbill Festival scheduled to take place in May and daily commuters including school children, teachers, parents, and tourists facing difficulty traveling along the stretch, the Village Council has decided to take the initiative to repair the road using its own limited resources.
According to the village council member, the last official maintenance was carried out in 2016–2017. Since then, the condition has worsened due to increased traffic and the lack of follow-up repairs. In the absence of government intervention, QMHSS’s parents body once stepped in to carry out temporary repairs, and an adjacent house owner also reportedly bore the cost of minor maintenance work personally.
To address the issue, the Village Council has submitted a representation to the Urban Development Officer and has also appealed to the state government, urging for immediate and comprehensive repair of the road.
Kichu stated that while the current works are being carried out to ensure basic accessibility, a long-term solution must come from the concerned authorities.
It was informed that the repair work will continue for three days, during which the road will remain closed to traffic. As such, commuters have been advised to take the Tongdentsuyong–Mokokchung Village route as an alternative.
