The 1st U-20 Revenant Football Running Trophy, organized by Moanunsang Memorial Sporting Club under the aegis of Revenant FC, Mokokchung, got underway on Monday at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex with Assistant Director of Food & Civil Supply, Jamonger, as the guest of honour.

Speaking as the guest of honour, Jamonger lauded the organizers for trying to promote young talents and for keeping the passion for football alive. He also encouraged the young players to participate with a “balanced discipline” between sport and education. He further added that one should put his heart and soul into the passion one loves with respect to others.

 

 

 

Earlier, Dr. Lanu Walling delivered a short speech while the invocation was said by Aongsen Aier. The inaugural function was chaired by Zulumanen, who also administered the tournament oath to the 16 teams participating in the tournament.

 

 

 

One key feature about the tournament is that it is being conducted without any entry fee charges but the winners will be awarded a running trophy, cash prize and certificates including individual prizes. The organizers said that the tournament is being organized not only to promote local young talents but also to scout for exceptional players whom they will mentor.

 

The organizers also said that they were only expecting not more than 7 or 8 teams to participate in the tournament but were pleasantly surprised by the huge number of participants. Many teams from the rural areas turned up for the tournament, they said.

 

 

 

The tournament is being played in a unique format. The 16 teams are divided into 8 Pools with 2 teams each. Pool A winners will play Pool B runners up while Pool B winners will play Pool A runners up and so on in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday. All 8 matches of the first round were played on Monday and all 8 pre-quarterfinals would be played on Tuesday.

 

The inaugural match of the tournament was played between Ao Temulong FC and White Wings FC, which the former won 2-0. Tangit of Ao Temulong FC donning jersey number 9 scored the first goal of the tournament in the 5th minute of the first match.
