Former Chief of Eastern Command, Lt Gen R.P. Kalita (Retd.), has raised concerns about the rising influence of fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh and urged increased vigilance in India, especially along its northeastern border and the China frontier.

According to a report by regional news portal NENow, Lt Gen Kalita warned that political developments under the Sheikh Hasina government have enabled fundamentalist groups to gain strength, posing a direct threat to India’s security. These groups are increasingly active near India’s northeastern states bordering Bangladesh, potentially jeopardizing strategic interests in the region.

On the northern border, he noted rapid expansion of military and logistical infrastructure by both India and China. Significant improvements include new helipads, airfields, and enhanced logistics to prepare for future security challenges.

Lt Gen Kalita also highlighted India’s progress in fortifying remote border areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand, with better infrastructure and improved data and mobile network coverage strengthening security.

While acknowledging these advances, he stressed that India must remain alert and maintain high readiness to protect its sovereignty and ensure stability, particularly along the sensitive northeastern frontier.
