The Manipur Police has officially confirmed that three civilians were killed and four others injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on two vehicles near Saheibung village under New Keithelmanbi Police Station in Kangpokpi district on May 13.

In its latest law-and-order update, the Police Control Room stated that the firing was “unprovoked” and carried out by unidentified gunmen on vehicles plying along the Saheibung village route.

“In an unprovoked firing by unidentified gunmen upon two vehicles plying along Saheibung village under New Keithelmanbi-PS, Kangpokpi district on 13.05.2026, three civilians were killed and four others injured,” the statement said.

The incident is believed to be linked to the deadly ambush on senior leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA), including Rev V Sitlhou, former General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention and current President of the TBA, who were returning from Churachandpur after attending the United Baptist Convention conference.

“Cordon and search operations have been launched by security forces at the surrounding area to nab those involved in the crime,” Manipur Police stated.

Despite the deadly incident, Manipur Police said the “overall law-and-order situation in the state during the last 24 hours was normal,” while noting that search operations, area domination exercises, and intelligence-based combing operations are continuing extensively in fringe and vulnerable areas across districts.
