AWUMT Prohibits Door-to-Door Non-Local Hawkers in Mokokchung Town

Mokokchung, 26 May (MTNews): Taking cognizance of the proliferation of door-to-door non-local hawkers in Mokokchung town, the All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) has resolved to prohibit all such vendors in all the 18 wards of the town. The decision to this effect was taken at the AWUMT Presidential Council meeting held on 24 May.

Informing the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Administrator of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) of its decision, the AWUMT also sought the latter’s intervention “before any untoward incident happened.”

The AWUMT reasoned that while there may be certain benefits brought about by the “door-to-door non-local hawkers selling items of all kinds in the town,” the abnormal growth of their numbers in recent times is alarming and warrants urgent intervention.

“The potential threats posed by unabated number of unknown non-local persons lurking around every corner of the town, visiting almost every household unsolicited, is not only disturbing from the security point of view but also incompatible with the social mores and norms of the locals,” AWUMT said.

The AWUMT also stated that “those caught at fault henceforth shall be dealt with sternly.”

Meanwhile, the AWUMT has also instructed the respective 18 ward authorities for “necessary action.”

It may be recalled that the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) had also earlier on 23 May expressed serious concerns over the significant increase in the number of “unvetted hawkers” operating in Mokokchung town, cautioning the public to be responsible and vigilant.
