The Lok Sabha election of 2024 in Nagaland has taken on a clear theme: a showdown between the collective forces of 60 MLAs against the concept of secularism championed by Indian National Congress. Dr Chumben Murry, the consensus candidate of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), enjoys the backing of these 60 MLAs, representing eight different political parties, including the BJP and the NDPP as well as four Independent MLAs.
Across the district, the 60 MLAs have launched vigorous campaigns in support of the PDA consensus candidate. Amidst this, Chief Minister Rio has introduced an intriguing twist: an “inter-party” friendly competition among the MLAs.
During his campaign in the 23 Impur Assembly Constituency under Mokokchung district, Advisor TN Mannen disclosed Chief Minister Rio’s declaration of a reward promised to the 60 MLAs, including the Chief Minister himself, based on the performance of their respective constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
“Reward, in a sense, unites all 60 MLAs. Therefore, among ourselves, including the Chief Minister, whoever performs better in the next parliamentary election, we anticipate overall improvement,” explained the advisor.
According to him, since all 60 MLAs support Dr Chumben Murry, they should be able to ensure he receives the largest percentage of votes, thereby enhancing the recognition of their consensus candidate nationwide.
“Unfortunately, our 20 MLAs from the Eastern region are boycotting it, and if they continue to do so, our numbers will reduce to 40. Nonetheless, the percentage ratio will be determined based on that figure,” he added.
Further, he said, “for exceptional performance, we will also consider allocating developmental activities. That is a good offer and a challenge”, adding, “it will lead to a friendly contest among ourselves”.
