The Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students’ Union (ENSSU) has concluded the second phase of its official tour for the 2024–26 tenure, conducted from June 10 to 13 under its jurisdiction. The Union visited all government-aided schools and offices in the region during the four-day tour.
In a statement issued by ENSSU President Tonika G. and General Secretary Anaka S. Chophy, the Union acknowledged the support of the local community during the visit. “While ENSSU appreciate the cooperation by our community during our official tour,” the Union stated, “we also appreciate the sincerity and dedicated teachers who perform its duty for the welfare of our students community.”
However, the Union expressed deep concern over absenteeism among some government school teachers. “The Union is disheartening to witnessed some erring teachers who turned into deaf ear despite of repeated appeal to be station at their own posting place and to perform their duties but all appeal had gone in vain,” the statement read.
Issuing a final warning, the ENSSU stated, “The Union warn all those teachers to be station at their own posting place within one week time from the release of this statement. After the release of this statement, if the Union found any teachers defaulting this order, will face consequences through legal procedure under the rule of law.”
Offices found locked, officers absent
The Union also inspected administrative offices in Seyochung ADC headquarters and Sitimi town EAC headquarters. “During our visit, the Union also witnessed that the administrative officers posted at Seyochung ADC Hq and Sitimi town EAC Hq were out of station,” it stated, noting that the Sitimi EAC office was “found locked and failing to perform their duties headed by concern authority.”
ENSSU further noted that it had repeatedly appealed to appoint an EAC officer for Sitimi over the last three years but “our appeal have fail to take up… and the general public of Sitimi area has been facing untold hardship.” The Union has now made an “earnest appeal to our Hon’ble Chief Minister, who is also the Minister in-charge of P&AR, to kindly consider our request and appoint EAC at Sitimi town at the earliest.”
Calling out continued absenteeism, the Union added, “Despite of many appeal made by general public, the concern officer has failed to perform their duties on stipulated time… so the Union also warn the particular officer to be station and perform his/her duties without any delay.”
The ENSSU stated that several government-aided offices at Seyochung and Sitimi were found locked during inspection. These include the SDEO (Education), SDEO (Agri), SDO (Soil), Block Development Office, Child Development Project Office, and the Veterinary Dispensary.
On a more positive note, the Union expressed satisfaction with medical establishments in Sitimi and Seyochung, saying they were “functioning as per government guided norms.” However, ENSSU was “dismay to witness under construction medical staff quarters which has been halt by the concern contractor over past 3 years.” The Union urged the concerned department “to take legal action against those contractors and urge them to complete at the earliest before the Union take its own course of action.”
Lighthouse NECTAR Project stalled at Sitimi High School
The Union also inspected the ongoing Lighthouse NECTAR project at Government High School, Sitimi. It was found that construction had stalled due to financial issues. “It has come to the light of the Union that the ongoing construction has been halt by the contractors due to financial implication,” it stated. The ENSSU appealed to the concerned department “to kindly release due bill for timely completion… as per mention in the norms.”
The Union also urged the contractor, M/S 3S Infra, to “deploy proper equipped machineries so as to avoid any hindrance in the ongoing project.” Furthermore, it warned the contractor to “refrain from any domestic issue that is hindering the ongoing project.”
