The 46th edition of the EGC Open Volleyball Tournament 2022 organized by the Evergreen Club, Ungma Village which commenced on 15th December concluded today with MH-10 Nagaland beating Longterok Senden Ungma (LSU) to lift the coveted title at Soyim Aonglenden, Ungma.

 

 

In a 1st set filled with straight aces being showered by both the teams, MH-10 outclassed LSU with a score line of 20/25. However, in the 2nd set, LSU took advantage of some unfamiliar dreary performance by the MH-10 side to win the set with a score line of 26/24. Recovering it’s loss in the 2nd set MH-10 outperformed LSU in a one sided 3rd set with the side acing the volley consistently and ending the set short with a score line of 12/25.

 

LSU in a do or die 4th set were unable to perform under pressure as the MH-10 side gave overwhelming attacks without any viable replies from the home side ending the set, and with it the match, with a score line of 13/25 and winning 3 sets of the best-of-five contest.

 

In a brief closing ceremony, Shashank Pratap Singh, the program’s guest of honour and the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung, said that sports shouldn’t be perceived as an extracurricular activity as they have evolved into viable career options with opportunities for athletes, referees, coaches, and other roles.

 

He continued by stating that Nagaland sports have significantly improved recently, citing the participation of the Nagaland contingent in the recently-concluded Northeast Olympics and the district participation in the Nagaland Olympics and Paralympic Games.

 

The DC also encouraged the parents to consider their children’s strengths rather than putting all of their attention on academics. He concluded by stating that as president of the Mokokchung District Sports Council, the office would do everything in its power to promote the district’s athletes.

 

The champions MH-10 Nagaland were awarded the trophy, citation and cash prize of Rs.60,000 while runners-up Longterok Senden Ungma received citations and cash prize of Rs. 40,000. Individual prizes were awarded to Ahika from MH-10 Nagaland for Best Spiker, Tongpangsunep from MH-10 Nagaland for Best Setter and Aketo from Longterok Senden Ungma was titled the Player of the Tournament.

 

Earlier in the day, the two semi-final matches were played between Changtongya Volleyball Association and MH-10, Nagaland where MH- 10 won 25/16, 25/15, 25/11 and between Longterok Senden Ungma (LSU) and Shipu where LSU won 25/21/, 25/20, 27/25 to enter the finals.
