The “Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalayas, Nagaland” Project (FBMP), co-financed by the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW (German Development Bank), is being implemented under the Mokokchung Forest Division. It covers Batch-2 villages, including Akhoya, Nukshiyim, Changtongya Old, and Unger villages.
The objectives of this project include the promotion of sustainable and effective management of forests and biodiversity in Nagaland, supporting improved connectivity and conservation of biodiversity, creating and enhancing livelihood opportunities for dependent communities, and establishing incentive mechanisms that reward communities for effectively protecting and maintaining their Community Conserved Areas.
A hands-on training session on “Capacity Building for Livelihood Activities” in L5 (Biodiversity Conservation Landscape) villages was conducted on January 23, 2025, at the Changtongya Town Hall, Changtongya Town, organized by FBMP, Mokokchung Division. The training involved participants from Akhoya, Nukshiyim, Changtongya Old, and Unger villages (Batch-2 villages).
The program was chaired by Tianenla Lemtur, with an invocation delivered by Talimeren Ao, DMU. In the keynote address, Alemwapang T. Imchen, Deputy Conservator of Forests, extended a warm welcome to all participants and expressed his gratitude for their attendance. He highlighted the aims and objectives of the training and urged all participants to make the most of the session, emphasizing its potential benefits for carrying out diverse livelihood activities in their respective localities.
I Kumzuk, Tatar of Changtongya Village, delivered a brief speech welcoming the participants. He expressed gratitude to the Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung, and FBMP for successfully implementing various projects in their village. He also highlighted the JICA project being implemented, which has greatly benefited the community through Entry Point Activities and plantation initiatives carried out under different modules, encouraging the participants to work diligently in livelihood activities while contributing actively to the community.
The technical session covered various topics, such as Kharif crop pest management and different agricultural farming methodologies, silkworm rearing and management, beekeeping, and livestock rearing and disease management. Martha Chakruno, ACTO (Plant Protection), KVK Mokokchung, led the session, presenting slides on the Punjab Cancer Train and emphasizing the link between cancer and excessive use of chemicals in farming. She showcased various chemical products to avoid in agricultural practices, discussed pest management for Kharif crops, and introduced sustainable farming methodologies. She also introduced integrated pest management strategies using cultural, biological, and chemical methods for pest control in cultivation areas.
Nokzenkerba, Extension Officer, Sericulture, Mokokchung, and Angukali Chophy, Extension Officer, Sericulture, Mokokchung, presented on successful eri silkworm rearing, highlighting the types of plants essential for feeding to achieve high-quality silk production.
The session on livestock rearing and disease management was conducted by Ketinaro, Veterinary Department, Mokokchung. He covered various topics, including breed selection, pig care and management, feeding practices, disease prevention and healthcare, housing management, and the care and management of gilts and sows during pregnancy and farrowing. He also distributed free veterinary medicines to the participants.
T Chubagangshi, Apiculturist (NBHM), a recent awardee for Best Beekeeper from the North East under the ST category by the Tribal Affairs Ministry (TRIFED) during the World Bee Day celebrations in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, on May 28, 2023, was invited as the resource person for the technical session on beekeeping. He shared his expertise and provided practical insights, enhancing participants’ understanding of beekeeping techniques.
