Governor of Nagaland Nand Kishore Yadav chaired a review meeting of the Department of Agriculture at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on July 28, taking stock of ongoing schemes, achievements, challenges and future plans for the State’s agriculture sector.
The department presented its organisational structure and highlighted initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, promoting sustainable farming, strengthening irrigation, expanding mechanisation and increasing farmers’ incomes. It informed that nearly 70% of Nagaland’s population is engaged in agriculture, with women accounting for around 65% of the agricultural workforce.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of major programmes, including Krishonnati Yojana, PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, National Mission on Edible Oils, Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region, National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization, Per Drop More Crop, Rainfed Area Development and Agroforestry.
The department also apprised the Governor of progress in oil palm cultivation, organic and natural farming, water harvesting infrastructure, farmer training and capacity building, and market linkages for agricultural produce.
Challenges including fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and poor road connectivity were also discussed.
Yadav appreciated the department’s efforts and stressed the need to strengthen sustainable agriculture, improve farmers’ livelihoods and ensure effective implementation of government schemes. He encouraged the department to adopt innovative approaches, strengthen convergence among stakeholders and make agriculture more productive, resilient and market-oriented.
