As of date, Nagaland has a total of 4,01,696 registered vehicles. In 2021, a total of 21872 new vehicles were registered in Nagaland while 25010 new vehicle registrations were made in 2022 till date.

 

 

As per information on the VAHAN dashboard, Kohima has the highest number of registered vehicles in Nagaland with 165791, followed by Dimapur with 120938. Mokokchung has the third highest number of registered vehicles with 52253.

 

 

 

‘Vahan’ is a national vehicle registry created by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The main aim of Vahan is to collate all the vehicular information available with all road transport authorities and provide citizens and regulators easy access to the same.

 

Meanwhile, in Mokokchung, there were 51,133 registered vehicles as of December 2021 which increased to 52,253 in November 2022 according to the Chief Minister’s official dashboard. In November of 2022, a total of 114 new vehicle registration were made in Mokokchung.

 

 

Nagaland has highest percentage of car owners among NE states

 

 

Nagaland has the highest percentage of households that own a car among the Northeastern States at 21.3 %. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler in the state is the second lowest in the country at 16.7 %.

 

According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021), Sikkim with 20.9 % has the second-highest percentage of households that own a car in the Northeast region while Tripura with 4.6 % is the lowest in the region.

 

Overall, Nagaland stands 6th highest in the country as Goa with 45.2 % has the highest percentage of households that own a car. Apart from that, Goa also has the highest percentage of households that own a motorcycle at 86.7 %.

 

 

 

According to the survey, the percentage of households that own a car in Bihar is the lowest in India at just 2 per cent. The percentage of households that own a two-wheeler in that state is 27.2 %.

 

The average percentage of households that own a car in India stands at 7.5 per cent, whereas the average percentage of households that own a two-wheeler stands at 49.5 per cent. In comparison, the states which have a higher percentage of car ownership generally have better per capita income. Whereas states with a high percentage of two-wheelers generally have a sub-par public transport facility, the survey said.
