It is not news that the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is the biggest festival in the state, attracting the most number of tourists. The ten-day festival has always been known for displaying vibrant Naga culture and tradition along with its massive talents in handicrafts, arts, its exotic food and its mesmerizing landscapes. That being said, the Hornbill Festival 2022 begins on Thursday, which also happens to be Nagaland Statehood Day. This year, however, is set to be the most unique in the festival’s 23-year history.

Mokokchung Times highlights seven points as precursor to Hornbill Festival 2022:

1. For the first time, the Hornbill Festival will take place at a time when Nagaland is on the verge of fragmentation. As the demand for Frontier Nagaland grows, the six districts of Eastern Nagaland, namely Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang, will be absent from the festival. Despite the Nagaland government’s pleas, the seven Naga tribes: the Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Sangtam, Tikhir, Phom, and Yimkhiung, which make up the six districts, have decided to boycott the festival entirely. It is to be recalled that the 22nd Hornbill Festival came to an abrupt end following the tragic incident of Oting, Mon on December 4, and the seven tribes were the first to pull out of the festival last year before the festival was cancelled for good.

2. Making it the first again, India plans to showcase Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival to the rest of the world as it takes over the G20 presidency for a year beginning December 1, 2022, and ending November 30, 2023. “India’s G20 is an opportunity for Nagaland to showcase its cultural diversity, uniqueness, and tourism potential,” said Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Chief Coordinator of the G20. The Group of 20 (G-20) is an organization of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 of the world’s largest economies, including many developing countries, as well as the European Union. The G-20, which was founded in 1999, promotes global economic growth, international trade, and financial market regulation.

3. The festival will also be graced by a long list of eminent persons starting from India’s Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, who will be attending the festival as the Chief Guest. Along with him, the honored guests includes Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India; Barry O’Farrell AO, Australian High Commissioner to India; and Eleonora Dimitrova, Ambassador of Bulgaria; with Ravi Bhatnagar, Director External Affairs and Partnerships South Asia Office (SOA) Reckitt, as the special guest of the inaugural day.

4. Amrendra Kumar, IRS, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong; G Ramesh, Executive Director & State Head, Indian Oil Corporation, Guwahati; and Admiral Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) will also be among the special guests on the following days. The chief host of the august function will be Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio; the festival host will be H Khehovi Yepthomi, Advisor of Tourism and Art & Culture, and Yekhüsü Tureng will be the tribal guest.

5. Another reason football fans are excited about the festival is the visit of the newly elected President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Kalyan Chaubey, who will be the first AIFF president to visit Nagaland. According to reports, he will launch FIFA ‘football for schools’ at IG Stadium Kohima, meet with the Chief Minister for Nagaland football roadmap, and lay the foundation stone for Dr T Ao stadium at T Khel Model Village Kohima.

6. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio, the Hornbill Festival 2022’s official digital partner, plans to provide free Wi-Fi to all visitors to Kisama Village during the festival. Jio will also provide high-speed internet broadband at the Media Felicitation Centre in Kisama, as well as a dedicated line for live streaming and CCTVs for security alerts, according to reports. This comes at a time when Nagaland is exploding with social media influencers and YouTubers.

7. Furthermore, in order to facilitate smooth passenger travel during the Hornbill Festival 2022, Nagaland will go digital for online taxi bookings. Additional 100 four-wheeler taxis and 50 two-wheeler taxis with driver information have been identified and registered in the Go-Taxi Service App for online taxi bookings. The passengers have been instructed to use the Go-Taxi App, which is available on Google Play.
