Kohima, December 11 (MTNews): As per the directive issued by the North East Students’ Organization (NESO), the Naga Students Federation (NSF) observed Black Day against the forceful imposition of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Sunday, December 11.

The Federation held symbolic protests at its oking (headquarters) by hoisting black flags and also in front of various government offices. “Despite the various exemptions made for the Northeastern region in the Act, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) still feels that the act is anti-people and will strive towards ensuring that the act is not implemented,” the NSF said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the North East Students’ Organization (NESO), comprising eight major student bodies in the region, observed the third anniversary of the passage of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), which subsequently became the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, on Sunday as “Black Day.”

It was on this day in 2019 that the Centre passed the CAB in Parliament ignoring the opposition from indigenous groups and organisations in the Northeast.
Various students’ organisations, which come under the NESO, put up black flags and black banners at important places as a mark of protest on Sunday.

The organisations are Khasi Students’ Union, All Assam Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Twipra Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union, Garo Students’ Union and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union.

“This observation is to give a message to the government of India that we are against this Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019, and to remind our people of yet another political injustice that the Centre perpetrated on the indigenous peoples of the northeast,” NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa said.

Jyrwa said that December 11 would always be remembered as a Black Day in the entire Northeast.
The NESO appealed to people to keep fighting for the just cause of “our God-given right.”
