The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), in collaboration with the Phek District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Nagaland, and Zuketsa Area Public Organization (ZAPO), organised a legal awareness programme at ZAPO Hall, Zuketsa, on August 30.
NSLSA Member Secretary Neiko Akami, NJS, highlighted the importance of free legal services in ensuring that social and economic disadvantages do not become barriers to justice. He said eligible persons can access free assistance in understanding legal rights, preparing documents and seeking remedies. He also highlighted Front Offices functioning in all 11 districts, legal aid for inmates and Lok Adalats, which he said had settled more than 600 cases during the year.
Speaking on the POCSO Act, JMFC-cum-Secretary, DLSA Phek, Kilemsungla Jamir, NJS, said child sexual offences include inappropriate touching, sexual harassment and child sexual abuse material, besides penetrative sexual assault. She urged the public to promptly report suspected abuse and remain attentive to behavioural changes in children.
Chief LADC, Phek, Vethothi Vero, raised concern over drug abuse, particularly in Phek town. He claimed that more than 1,000 youths were involved in drug abuse and said opium accounted for around 49 percent of reported use. He called for proactive community participation and encouraged those struggling with addiction to seek professional help and rehabilitation.
Inspector, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Phek, Er. Juwe Pojar, highlighted requirements concerning accurate weighing, measurement, packaging licences and mandatory product declarations. She reminded consumers to check verification certificates, expiry dates and MRP.
Retainer Lawyer, DLSA Phek, Sekhotso Rokha, spoke on consumer rights and stressed the importance of retaining bills, cash memos and product labels when seeking redressal. He also advised consumers to scrutinise GST and other charges.
The programme was chaired by ZAPO General Secretary Nyitso Therie, while ZAPO President Keduitsolhi Wetsah delivered the welcome address. Around 150 council, women, youth and student leaders attended.
