Pursunep Longkumer, a young footballer hailing from Longkong village in Mokokchung district, is set to live his dream as he gears up to play in the prestigious Hero I-League for Shillong Lajong FC. The 21-year-old talent signed a two-year contract with the club, marking a significant milestone in his promising football career.

Longkumer’s journey to the I-League began with an impressive performance in the second division league qualifying round for Shillong Lajong FC. He caught the attention of the club during this period and was offered his first contract on a trial basis in January, which lasted for three months. His dedication and skill on the field did not go unnoticed, and the club was quick to offer him an extended two-year contract when they qualified for the I-League.

 

Ecstatic about the opportunity to play for Shillong Lajong FC, Pursunep expressed his pride and happiness with Mokokchung Times, stating, “I feel so proud and happy to be part of Lajong FC family. It was my dream to play for Shillong Lajong. Now with Lajong, I have high expectations because we have more quality players and as a team I know we (Lajong) can give any team a good fight.”

 

As a student of State Academy Dimapur, Pursunep got his big break in the Dr T Ao trophy. Representing Dimapur district, he played a pivotal role in the team’s victory in 2022. His standout performances in the Northeast Olympics earned him the title of “Man of the Match” three times and paved the way for his recruitment by Shillong Lajong FC.

 

When asked about his journey to the club, Pursunep attributed his discovery to the Northeast Olympic Games held in Shillong in 2022, where he caught the eye of the Lajong club scouts.

 

“Credit goes to my coaches Sir Roko and Sir Mughato,” he said.

 

Having spent most of his childhood playing football, Pursunep’s dedication led him to enroll in the state football academy. His footballing prowess was evident as he showcased his skills while playing for clubs like Port Trust Calcutta and Telongjem FC. As a winger, he played an exciting brand of football, winning the Mokokchung District Football Association trophy twice with Telongjem FC.

 

 

With his sights set on achieving greater heights, Pursunep revealed his aspirations, saying, “My dream is to play for big clubs in ISL and get selected for Team India. Like any other aspiring footballer in the country, I know the competition level will be tough, but I will give my all to achieve this big dream.”
