More than 10 vehicles plunged through this spot. Then Kabur Telok stepped in.
Members of Kabur Telok, a group of well-wishers from Salangtem Ward, Mokokchung, during the construction of a protective wall and installation of safety railing at an accident-prone stretch near Salangtem Community Hall on Friday, June 12.

According to members of the group, more than ten vehicles have plunged through the area, with some incidents causing damage to a house located below the roadside. In one such accident last year, the kitchen of the house was reportedly damaged.

The initiative was undertaken by Kabur Telongjem, a community group comprising around 20 members who contribute their own resources towards welfare activities in the locality.

Speaking to Mokokchung Times, Imtiakum, a member of the group, said the railing was installed to improve safety for both motorists and residents living nearby.

“So far, at least ten vehicles have plunged through this area,” he said, adding that the absence of adequate protective barriers had long posed a safety concern.

“It is not only for the Salangtem Ward residents but for everyone who passes this road,” the members said.

Temsulong, the owner of the house affected by previous accidents, welcomed the initiative.

“I am very happy about the initiative,” he said.

Members of Kabur Telongjem said the installation of the railing reflects the group’s continued efforts to address community needs through voluntary service and collective contributions.

Explaining the motivation behind the group’s activities, Lanuakum said, “As responsible citizens, we want to encourage the community to give to society. We need to come together and learn from one another.”

Apart from the latest initiative, the group has undertaken several community-oriented activities in the ward over the years, including cleanliness drives, construction of footpaths for students, road repairs and environmental protection efforts.
